Former trustee of Midlands Excellence receives Honorary Fellowship from LJMU

Mick Laverty, Chief Executive of Advantage West Midlands and former trustee of Midlands Excellence, has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to UK regeneration. 

Liverpool John Moores University has released details of the Honorary Fellowships to be conferred during this year.

Honorary Fellowships are given in recognition of outstanding achievement by an individual in a given field or profession and to those who exemplify LJMU's ethos to 'dream, plan and achieve.'

Professor Nigel Weatherill, Vice-Chancellor of LJMU comments:

"I am particularly pleased to announce this year's Honorary Fellows; as individuals they embody our ethos of Dream, Plan and Achieve and have deep and abiding links with both the city and with our University. Each of these individuals has achieved at the highest level in their professional lives and have done so with great integrity and passion."

Nominations for Fellowships are invited from both inside and outside the University and are selected on a confidential basis by a special committee representing the Board of Governors, the Academic Board and the Students' Union.

Mick is the Chief Executive of Advantage West Midlands (AWM) and an alumnus of Liverpool Polytechnic. During his time at AWM was responsible for overseeing all of the 2,500 projects and programmes funded by AWM and played a leading role in major transformational schemes such as the re-development of: New Street Station; Ansty Park in Coventry – home to the national manufacturing technology centre and i54 in Wolverhampton – home to Jaguar Land Rover’s new engine plant.

Under his leadership, in 2010, AWM were rated as the best performing Regional Development Agency by the National Audit Office and Mick was awarded the inaugural Birmingham Chamber of Commerce President’s award for services to business and the West Midlands. In 2011 AWM won the prestigious Midlands Excellence Award and in 2012 Mick was awarded the West Midlands Institute of Directors Chairman's award, again for services to business and the West Midlands.

The Fellowships will be presented during LJMU's forthcoming graduation ceremonies week commencing 9 July 2012.
