Treasuring our Treasure
Learning to treasure our successful industries has never been a great trait in the United Kingdom. We tend to take such winners for granted and only praise their value after their demise. The many famous UK car marques have either died or been sold abroad. But this is not to say that our car industry is not successful. In fact we now export more car value than ever before, but sadly run by owners from elsewhere around the globe and not here.

One key area we should treasure and recognise is the high end car engineering around Formula One where we are recognised as a global leader. Although the sport has a high profile, the engineers and their businesses seem to get little recognition, and one of their frustrations, especially amongst the component suppliers, has been the lack of available engineers with the requisite skills. Why do we insist in characterising engineers still as car mechanics with an oily rag and a spanner, as opposed to the Germans who have far higher respect for their Herr Doctor Engineers?
