Voting in Italy. About the only clear vote we are going to get this year in Italy is likely to be the selection of the new Pope and, whilst he will be a powerful man, he won’t be able to solve Italy’s financial issues.

Mind you, he is going to have enough on his plate already managing the Vatican’s own somewhat questionable financial position. As for the politicians in the secular world of Italy, it would seem that they have been voted in to form a political gridlock.

The equity markets last week reacted as ever with a knee jerk consideration, so that all the confidence in the progress made on the Euro crisis had apparently just been thrown away. The usual suspects were out almost immediately to rant in the tone of “I told you so”. Well maybe things aren’t quite that simple (although some of the commentators may well be).
